June 05: Big and beautiful: Can large entities lead innovation within public transport?
Can Rome be built in a day? And by a start-up?
With urbanization accelerating and 60% of the world’s population living in cities by 2030, large-scale projects must transform our urban centers. For example, UITP’s host city of Barcelona aims for a 21% traffic reduction with car-free “superblocks”. These are holistic concepts we need to drive change. The other lever is digitalization. One trend is clear: The larger the city – the higher the impact of digitalization. Only by combining the real and digital worlds for efficiency gains can expand cities become livable and sustainable. Achieving this requires large and small organizations innovating in digital harmony. But for comprehensive transformation, and ‘building Rome in a day’, large entities like city governments and companies like Siemens Mobility can accelerate our progress. Was Rome built in a day? Of course not. But can we digitalize and transform the everyday in entire cities quickly? We certainly can if we work together in an aligned ecosystem.
