As Head of Competence Center Mobility at PTV Group, Dr. Noekel is responsible for novel applications and methodological development of the PTV Vision Traffic Suite of transportation planning software, including PTV Visum (demand modelling), PTV Vissim (traffic microsimulation), PTV Optima (real-time traffic management). Over many years he has been contributing to these products, having designed more recently the software functionality for Activity-based Demand Modelling and for Shared Mobility in PTV Visum.

He participates in numerous collaborations with the academic community in transportation modelling and has published on diverse topics, particularly public transport and traffic assignment. Dr Noekel joined PTV Group in 1997 and has worked on numerous consultancy and software development projects in transportation planning and traffic engineering for more than 30 years. He holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Kaiserslautern and a M.Sc. in Computer Science and Operations Research from RWTH Aachen.

  • June 05: Leveraging Passenger Flow and Crowd Management with Technology and Innovation

    Optimizing Passenger Flows Through Stations

Successful passenger flow and crowd management in public transport depends on well-designed networks and stations. Any good solution will need to address the problem at three different levels: 1) Origin-destination passenger flows must be known to identify potential bottlenecks (e.g. most important transfer stations). 2) These stations must be well-designed for throughput, convenience, and safety. 3) Level of service in operations needs to be monitored and optimal decisions taken in case of disruptions. Software for travel demand modeling and traffic simulation can help find and communicate good solutions.
