In 2005, Dr. Kwak obtained a doctorate in electric vehicles from Purdue University in the United States and joined the Korea Railroad Research Institute. Since 2009, he has been working as a national project leader for battery-powered wireless tram, and has been developing technologies and revising laws to introduce trams to about 10 local governments in Korea.
He is currently the head of the KRRI Railway Vehicles Division and is in charge of vehicle systems from tram to high-speed train. Recently, he is interested in the development of autonomous driving technology and contactless charging system for applying IT technology to trams and railroad vehicles. In 2014, he was awarded the UIC R&D Innovation, and in 2016, he was selected as one of the 15 representative industrial and technological achievements of Korea.
