MTR Decarbonisation - Transforming the Future

Despite carrying millions of passengers around town in Hong Kong every day, MTR’s energy consumption accounts for only 3.5% of total transport consumption. As a low-carbon transport provider, MTR is setting the 2030 science-based targets for railway operation in Hong Kong and strives to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. This presentation will share how a RailGreen concept is developed, which integrates innovation and technology to formulate green solutions to address ESG commitments on carbon emission reduction, renewable energy and waste management, to enhance energy and resource efficiency in Hong Kong. These green initiatives include the large-scale chiller replacement project, solar panel installation at stations and depots, setup of Green Railway Model Station, regenerative braking energy etc. The resource utilization solutions will also be introduced, such as upcycling solution in Ballast Replacement Project, and the green lifestyle reward app – Carbon Wallet, which can also engage the community and industry partners.
