Getting Ready: Adapting public transport to climate change and extreme weather events

The assets and operations of the STM are subject to many climate-related factors, including heavy rain, heat waves and destructive weather systems. Against the backdrop of climate change, the STM is assessing the risks and mitigation measures to be implemented. The transit provider’s robust infrastructure and equipment and the operating processes it has implemented over the years provide a level of resilience to risk. For new projects, climate resilience has been built into the design process to anticipate and mitigate risk. However, adapting existing network infrastructure will remain the STM’s main challenge. By acquiring better knowledge of the risks involved, the STM will be able to determine the nature and extent of the measures it must implement. Marie-Claude Léonard will talk about the impact of certain climate events on STM operations. She will explain how the company is protecting itself and examine its interdependent relationship with public services.
