Rail reform as a catalyst for innovation

Lord Hendy of Richmond Hill, Chair of Network Rail, and former president of UITP, will set out the challenges facing the British railway industry and, using specific examples, will describe how ambitious plans for reform will support greater innovation. Like most European countries, Britain has pursued privatisation of the railway and the separation of track and train. Although this has had some positive effects and has coincided with a significant increase in the number of people using the railway, it has resulted in a disconnected system that is unable to plan for the longer term, which has little accountability, and which is incapable of dealing with the financial impact of Covid without support from government. Lord Hendy will describe how they are working with industry to deliver organisational change including the development of a sustainable guiding mind which puts the customer first and which encourages technological and organisational innovation.
