June 06: Fare affordability within public transport
Fare Affordability Within Singapore's Public Transport
2.5 million commuters depend on Singapore’s public transport system daily. The PTC reviews public transport fares annually during the Fare Review Exercise. The fare adjustment formula and mechanism stewarded by the PTC provides a clear and objective basis for fare adjustments, by assessing the cost changes in the operation of the public transport system. Both the fare adjustment formula and mechanism have worked well in balancing the need to ensure fare affordability and the need for fares to keep pace with changes in operating costs. PTC continues to ensure that public transport fares are affordable through the following four tools, Providing Government Subsidies, Monitoring Public Transport Expenditure, Provision of Concession Schemes and Adult Monthly Travel Pass and Providing Targeted Support for Lower-Income Households An affordable, high-quality and financially sustainable public transport system is a shared responsibility among the Government, public transport operators, and commuters.
