In April 2020 David John Yorke joined Ballard Power Systems Europe A/S as Market Development Manager.
David has worked on zero and low-emission buses for the last 14 years and prior to his role at Ballard he oversaw all aspects of the London hydrogen fuel cell bus project – including the manufacture of buses, set up of facilities and the daily operation of buses. This work was carried out in close collaboration with Transport for London, FCH JU, CHiC and 3Emotion projects, plus other key stakeholders.
Along with being a leading authority on hydrogen fuel cell buses and heavy duty vehicles, David is a specialist in the technology and operation of other zero and low-emission vehicles.
David is a European and Chartered Engineer (EUR ING and CEng), qualified to master’s degree level in both Hydrogen Safety Engineering and Electronics.

Hydrogen Fuel Cells: Decarbonising Public Transport Sustainably and Affordably

Zero-emission vehicles, including hydrogen fuel cells, are critical for the future of decarbonising public transit. However, for proactive governments and industry who are decarbonising, the issue of cost is significant. Studies project fuel cell electric vehicles having a total cost of ownership less than internal combustion engines and battery electric vehicles in the next five years. As manufacturing and economies of scale improve, the commercial prospects for hydrogen fuel cell-led technology will increase, offering an emission-free solution to operators and municipal authorities. Focusing on fuel cell electric buses (FCEBs), the presentation will cover: - Competitive positioning of fuel cells - The practical elements of running a FCEB fleet - Moving to large scale deployments - How FCEB experience can be the guide for decarbonising other public transit such as coach, trains and ferries
