Dr. Daniel Reck is transport engineer at transports publics genevois (tpg), the public transport operator in Geneva, Switzerland. He is in charge of conducting and improving data collection for public transport planning in the Greater Geneva area (1M+ inhabitants).

Daniel holds a Ph.D. from ETH Zurich, where he studied travel behaviour with emerging transport modes and their integration with public transport. His research has been covered in international media outlets (e.g., National Geographic, WIRED, The Globe and Mail, Die Zeit, SRF/RTS, NZZ). He is recipient of the OECD International Transport Forum’s 2021 Young Researcher of the Year Award.

Prior to academia, Daniel gathered several years of experience in management consulting for large transport organisations and public ministries.

  • June 05: Leveraging Passenger Flow and Crowd Management with Technology and Innovation

Harnessing digital data collection to enhance public transport planning and recover ridership following the pandemic

COVID-19 has led to a substantial and sustained decline in public transport ridership. In order to recover ridership, adapt networks to the “new normal”, and increase resilience towards external shocks, the industry needs to increase the agility of its planning processes and operations. Digital data collection methods promise to enable detailed understanding of passenger flows at the individual level and at near real-time, including short-term changes in travel behaviour. When integrated into planning and operations processes, this kind of data enables increasingly frequently needed short-term, data-driven decision making. This presentation features two case studies of how digital data collection tools were implemented and integrated in public transport planning and operations processes by the public transport operator in Geneva, Switzerland.
